On Tuesday, a Bhopal court sent former judge Giribala Singh to judicial custody for 14 days in connection with the alleged dowry death of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma. The development comes days after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled Singh's anticipatory bail and follows her arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing allegations of dowry-related harassment and domestic violence preceding Sharma's death.
The case relates to the death of Twisha Sharma, a Noida resident who was married to Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh. Sharma was found dead at her residence in Bhopal on May 12. Her family subsequently accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to continuous harassment and domestic violence linked to dowry demands, leading to the registration of an FIR at Katara Hills Police Station.
Following the investigation, the CBI arrested both Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, who is a retired judge and currently served as President of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Madhya Pradesh. While Singh had initially secured anticipatory bail from a sessions court, the relief was later set aside by the High Court.
When Giribala Singh was produced before the trial court after the expiry of her CBI custody, the investigating agency did not seek any further custodial interrogation. Taking note of the circumstances, Judge Shobhana Bhalawe remanded her to judicial custody for fourteen days. The court's order followed the conclusion of the earlier CBI remand and marked the next stage of proceedings in the investigation concerning the allegations surrounding Twisha Sharma's death.
